ATHENS, Ga. – Despite a disappointing second round performance, the No. 10/12 ranked North Florida golf team remains in the hunt at the NCAA Athens Regional being played on the UGA Golf Course.
UNF, the No. 2 seed, struggled Friday slipping from second to third place after shooting a seven-over-par 291 on day two of the three day competition. The Ospreys are still under-par of the tournament with a 36-hole total of 562 (-6).
Senior Kevin Aylwin again paced the Osprey linksters carding an even par 71 on day two. Aylwin is fourth in the individual medalist competition with a two-round total of 136 (-6).
“Today was a tough one all around,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We just were never able to get anything going as a team. Kevin (Aylwin) played another solid round for us but the rest of our play was just average. We need to regroup and refocus and come out ready to compete in tomorrow's final round.”
UNF freshman MJ Maguire joins Aylwin in the top 10 following a second round 74 (+3). Maguire is currently tied for eighth at 140 (-2). Junior Sean Dale posted a 73 (+2) and is tied for 15th with an even par 142.
Junior Kevin Phelan and freshman Joey Petronio are both tied for 30th with matching scores of 145 (+3). Phelan carded round of 74 (+3) on Friday while Petronio finished one shot better with a 73 (+2).
Top-seeded Alabama extended its lead in the team competition to double digits after a round of eight-under 276. The Tide sits atop the leaderboard at 545, 12 strokes ahead of East Carolina (557). North Florida is third followed by Georgia (568), New Mexico (575), UNC Wilmington (577), Houston (578), Long Beach State (578), Wake Forest (578), Augusta State (579), Iowa (581), UT-Arlington (587) and Loyolad-Maryland (601).
Bama's Bobby Wyatt tops the medalist standings at 133, one shot better than teammate Justin Thomas (134) and two in front of ECU's Ryan Eibner (135).
North Florida will be paired with Bama and ECU in Saturday's final round beginning at 8:40 a.m. off of the first tee. Live hole-by-hole results are available online at www.golfstat.com.
