
Women's Tennis Clinches Spot in A-Sun Tourney with 6-1 Win Against Belmont

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis clinched a spot in the 2012 Atlantic Sun Women's Tennis Championship on Friday with a 6-1 win over Belmont at the UNF Tennis Complex. The win also allowed the Ospreys to remain the only undefeated team in Atlantic Sun play.
UNF won all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. No. 78 Aline Berkenbrock and Lorena Aviles shutout Fabiana Mersan and Catherine Holliday 8-0 at No. 1 doubles. Simona Weymar and Rebeca Pereira posted an 8-4 No. 2 doubles win over Nikki Maciel and Laura Stack. At No. 3 doubles, Danielle Day and Melanie Aguirre cruised to an 8-1 win against Natalia Nunes and Carolyn Caire.
The Ospreys then took five of the six singles matches. Berkenbrock posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Mersan at No. 1 singles, while Aviles down Maciel at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-2. Day defeated Holliday 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot and Aguirre won at No. 5 singles against Stack in straight 6-0, 6-0 sets. Marina Cunningham won by default at No. 6 singles against Nunes.
Belmont's only point was a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles by Caire over Weymar.
UNF returns to its home courts at the UNF Tennis Complex on Saturday for the final time during the 2012 season. The Ospreys host Lipscomb in its home finale in a 10 a.m., match that will be held at the same time as the men's tennis match between UNF and Lipscomb. Prior to the start of the match, UNF will honor its two seniors – Berkenbrock and Day.
