JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida head basketball coach Matthew Driscoll announced the signing of Florida prep product Ray Rodriguez to a national-letter-of-intent to play for the Ospreys starting in 2012-13.
“Ray is a tremendous addition to our basketball family,” said Driscoll. “Not only does he fill a position we were looking for, but he also more importantly fits our program from a character standpoint. He is exactly the kind of kid that every parent would like their son to be. His inclusion in our signing class adds one more guy with a winning attitude and pedigree.”
Rodriguez, a 6-2 guard, was the starting point guard for Hialeah Gardens High School near Miami. An All-Dade County first-team selection by the Miami Herald, Rodriguez led Hialeah to a 27-5 record and the 8A State Championship this season. The Gladiators ended the season with a 13-game win streak including a 63-46 win over Hagerty in the title game. Rodriguez, who averaged 18.0 points and 10 assists per game during the season, finished with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists in the championship game.
“North Florida was the perfect fit for me,” said Rodriguez. “The location is close enough for my parents to come see me play and I really liked the coaching staff. Academics were also very important to me and I was impressed with the UNF Business School.”
Along with his solid play for Hialeah Gardens, Rodriguez has also been a key member of the Golf Coast AAU program under the direction of Jarrod Lazarus and coach Shakey Rodriguez.
Rodriguez becomes the fifth member of UNF's 2012 recruiting class joining joining Jacksonville natives, Cameron Naylor (Providence) and Beau Beech (Ponte Vedra), Aaron Bodager (Hagerty) and Demarcus Daniels (Turner Country in Ga.).

One of the most important factors for Ray was the relationship with Coach Driscoll. Andy [Diaz] and Jerron [Granberry] both played for us and had nothing but great things to say about Coach and the program as a whole.”
