JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida track and field teams will welcome nine conference rivals to Hodges Stadium this weekend as they play host to the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Track and Field Championships on April 20-21.
Almost all of the Ospreys will be entering the meet fresh after taking last week off following a solid showing at the Florida Relays and South Florida Invitational two weeks ago.
For the men, sophomore David Shepherd will look to build on his performance last year, which garnered him Most Outstanding Male Freshman Performer honors, after he grabbed top-five finishes in the pole vault and javelin and contributed to a pair of school record-setting relay teams. This weekend, Shepherd will compete in the 200m, javelin, triple jump and the pole vault, an event in which he is currently seeded first in the A-Sun by 1'5”.
Also looking to continue a stellar 2012 campaign will be junior Cameron Dickerson, who has claimed the last two A-Sun Men's Track Performer of the Week awards. Dickerson will be competing in both the 5000m and the 800m, in which he owns the fastest time recorded in the A-Sun this year.
Junior James Post also hopes to find the podium as the top returning finisher from last year's 1500m.
The women will also be led by a defending Most Outstanding Freshman Performer, as sophomore Brianna Frazier competes in the 200m, 400m and the triple jump. She captured gold in the 400m last year and currently has the third-fastest time recorded in Division I this year.
The field events will also prove key as senior Christina King will be defending her pole vault title, and junior Jennifer Smyth will be looking to repeat as champion in the long jump.
Senior Erin Nixon will hope to build on last year's fourth-place finish in the 5000m, as sophomore Shelby Kittrell aims to defend her runner-up finish in the 10,000m.
