Baseball Set to Open Atlantic Sun Play

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team begins Atlantic Sun Conference play with a three-game road series against Florida Gulf Coast at Swanson Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla. The Ospreys enter the weekend 12-5 (.706), while the Eagles are 6-10 (.375). The weekend marks the conference openers for both schools.
The two teams began A-Sun play against each other last season in Jacksonville with FGCU taking the series two games to one. Florida Gulf Coast won the opening game of the series last season, claiming an 8-4 victory. North Florida responded with a 10-3 win in game two to even the series. In the rubber match between the two teams, the Eagles edged the Ospreys, 5-4, in 13 innings.
Florida Gulf Coast leads the all-time series 10-4 (.714), including a 5-2 (.714) advantage in Fort Myers. North Florida won the first two meetings in the series, claiming a 14-2 victory in Fort Myers on Feb. 5, 2003 and a 5-1 road win on March 1, 2008. FGCU earned eight straight victories in the series. The series is tied 2-2 (.500) in the last four meetings between the two teams.
On May 27, 2010 in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament, George Lott pitched a complete game against No. 28 Florida Gulf Coast as the Ospreys routed the Eagles 13-2 for their first A-Sun Tournament victory in school history.
North Florida enters the weekend after splitting a pair of road games with in-state foe FIU. The Panthers claimed the first game 6-4 with the Ospreys rallying from a five-run deficit to claim the second game, 10-8.
The Ospreys entered the five-game road swing after finishing last week 4-0. North Florida opened up the week with a 19-1 road victory against Florida A&M. Following the game with the Rattlers, the Ospreys swept South Alabama at Harmon Stadium, clinching the sweep with a walk-off grand slam in the 13th inning by Garrick Ferguson.
For his efforts last week, Tyler Marincov was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week. The sophomore hit safely in all four games with three multiple hit games. Marincov led the Ospreys in hits, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and total bases. He batted .556 on the week, going 10-for-18 with a double and a pair of home runs. Marincov drove in six runs while scoring five runs. The sophomore boasted a .944 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.
College Baseball Daily released its Top 25 Mid-Major Poll on Monday, March 12 and the University of North Florida baseball team entered the rankings at No. 23.
