JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team is set for a four-game series with Georgia Southern over the weekend. Thursday and Friday's games will be played at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium in Jacksonville, while Saturday and Sunday's games will be played at J.I. Clements Stadium in Statesboro, Ga. The first three games will be played at 6:00 p.m., while Sunday's game is slated for 1:30 p.m.
North Florida and Georgia Southern have met on the baseball diamond 10 times with the Eagles holding a slim 6-4 (.600) advantage in the series. The Ospreys are 2-2 (.500) in Jacksonville and 2-4 (.333) in Statesboro, Ga. UNF won both meetings last season and have won three of the last four games.
The Ospreys first win as a Division I team came on the road against the Eagles (W, 7-2) on Feb. 4, 2006.
UNF is currently 4-3 (.571) on the season, winning three of the last four games on the road. North Florida downed previously undefeated USF, 9-1, during a midweek game.
Following the road game with the Bulls, the Ospreys took two out of three games on the road against Jacksonville State. UNF opened the series with JSU with a 7-2 victory. The Ospreys followed that win with a series clinching 9-3 victory. In the final game of the series, the Gamecocks edged the Ospreys, 3-2.
Offensively, the Ospreys enter the weekend led by freshman Drew Weeks. The rookie boasts a team-best .577 batting average and leads the team with 15 hits, including four doubles. Tyler Marincov is right behind Weeks with a .400 batting average. Marincov leads the team with eight runs scored and is tied for the team lead with Joe Iorio with six RBI.
On the mound, North Florida boasts five starting pitchers with an earned run average under 4.00. Newcomer Nick Allbritton leads the team with a 1.29 ERA. Tyler Moore leads the team with 17 strikeouts, followed by Tommy Organ with 11 and Michael Renner with 10. Kyle Westwood is 1-0 on the season after defeating USF and will take the mound in the series opener on Thursday.
Scouting the Opposition:
Georgia Southern (5-3) dropped the first of five games this week to Mercer on Tuesday and is looking to bounce back when Justin Hess takes the mound in game one. Hess is coming off a relief outing against Radford in which he allowed just one run and one hit in four innings. Chris Beck, Lucas Hart and Kyle Rowe round out the weekend rotation.
The Eagles are hitting .292 as a squad and rank second in the Southern Conference with a .410 on-base percentage. Eric Phillips leads the team with a .424 batting average, five doubles and 12 RBIs. Michael Burruss is second on the team with nine RBIs, a .364 average and has scored a team-best 13 runs.
