PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- No. 13-ranked North Florida moved up to sixth place in the team standings Monday after posting a second round 295 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational played at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Opsreys, who trimmed five strokes off their opening round performance, ended the round with a two-day total of 595 climbing up a spot in the team standings headed into Tuesday's final round.
Junior Kevin Phelan again carded UNF's best round finishing with an even-par 72 followed by senior Kevin Aylwin at 73 (+1). Phelan is tied for 10th with a two-day total of 145 while Aylwin is tied for 15th at 147.
Junior Pete Kellerman rebounded with a 74 (+2) in the second round with junior Sean Dale and freshman MJ Maguire both posting rounds of four-over 76. Dale is tied for 35th (151), Kellerman is tied for 48th (153) and Maguire is tied for 54th (154).
In addition to UNF's competitive lineup, a quartet of Osprey linksters competed as individuals in the event. Senior Joe Byun, the 2010 medalist at the Hayt Invitational, fired a one-under 71 on Monday and is tied for 41st (152). Freshman Joey Petronio is tied for 30th at 150 followed by Brant DeLongy (160 / T-79th) and Joey Marino (170 / 87th).
“As a whole, we played much better today,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “We were one hole away from having an extremely solid round. While our score didn't exactly reflect it, I thought we played some of our best golf of the spring today. Our challenge will be to get off to a fast start tomorrow and see what happens. The course is set-up for high risk and reward so it should be a fun finish.”
UCF continues to lead the team competition with a 36-hole tally of 588. North Texas, Arkansas and Tennessee are all tied for second at 591 followed by TCU (593), North Florida, LSU (596), Jacksonville (597), Tulsa (597), Coastal Carolina (598), UAB (600), Ole Miss (606), Georgia Southern (608), Furman (612) and Mercer (617).
TCU's Julien Bren (68-71=139) posted a second straight under-par round and leads the individual medalist competition by a shot over Horned Frog teammate Johan de Beer (140) and opening round leader Sang Yi (140) of LSU.
