PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 16-ranked University of North Florida golf team is set to host its annual home tournament, the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational, beginning Sunday at Sawgrass Country Club.
The three-day, 54-hole event features a 15-team field highlighted by nine teams ranked in Golfweek's Top 50 including four Top 20 squads (#7 Arkansas, #14 LSU, #16 North Florida, #19 UCF). Other teams competing include: UAB (30), Tulsa (47), Furman, Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, TCU (36), Jacksonville, North Texas (39), Mercer, Tennessee (37) and Georgia Southern. The course at Sawgrass CC will play to a par 72 over 6,910 yards.
Arkansas is the defending champion of the event after edging the field by a slim two-stroke margin. North Florida has twice claimed their home tournament title including a wire-to-wire championship in 2010.
North Florida's lineup for the event is led by junior Sean Dale, ranked 7th individually in latest Golfweek poll. Dale will be joined by senior Kevin Aylwin, juniors Pete Kellerman and Kevin Phelan and freshman MJ Maguire. In addition, Joe Byun, Joey Petronio, Joey Marino and Brant DeLongy will be participating as individuals. Byun earned the individual medalist title in 2010.
“It is always fun to play at home in front of family and friends,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “The golf course is in wonderful shape and the weather looks like it will be a challenge as always during this event. We have not played our best so far this spring so this is a great opportunity for us to jump start the rest of the spring. I am looking forward to us playing well against a very competitive field.”
Tee times for the event begin at 8 a.m. off of both the first and 10th tees. On Sunday, the Ospreys will be paired with Arkansas and Tulsa starting on Hole No. 1 at 8:45 a.m.
Tournament action is scheduled for Feb. 26-28. Admission to the Hayt Collegiate Invitational is free and open to the public.
