GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The 12th-ranked North Florida golf team is in 11th place following day one play at the SunTrust Gator Invitational being held at the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
The Ospreys posted rounds of 290-302 to finish with a 36-hole total of 592, just two strokes out of the Top 10. Junior Sean Dale was the team's top performer on the opening day ranking tied for 17th after carding back-to-back rounds of 72 and a 144 (+4) tally.
Junior newcomer Pete Kellerman fired the low round of the day Saturday morning with an even par 70. He followed that with a second round 77 and is tied for 27th at 147 (+7).
Kevin Aylwin is tied for 53rd at 151 (76-75) with Kevin Phelan 60th (75-78=153) and Joey Petronio 65th (73-82=155) rounding out the UNF lineup.
“Today was a really rough day for us,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “I felt like Pete played a good round in the morning, but the rest of the guys really struggled. Things just got worse for us in afternoon play. We have just got to refocus and rest up for another challenging day tomorrow. I'm looking forward to seeing how the guys respond to today's play.”
No. 4 Auburn leads the team standings heading into Sunday's final round after finishing day one at 560. The Tigers lead tournament host Florida (565) by five strokes with No. 7 Arkansas (577), Liberty and Florida State completing the Top Five squads.
AU's Dominic Bozzelli sits atop the individual medalist competition at 132 (-8).
Tournament action at the Gator Invitational concludes with a final round of 18 holes slated to tee off Sunday at 10 a.m.
