JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball wraps up the regular season this weekend with a pair of Atlantic Sun matches at UNF Arena. The Ospreys start the weekend against ETSU on Friday and then end it with USC Upstate on Saturday in what will also be Senior Day. Saturday will be the final home match for the Ospreys' five seniors – Nicole Baran, Carolyn Jenkins, Dagnija Medina, Marija Pantovic and Paige Pridgeon.
“This is another important weekend for us,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “We welcome two tough teams in ETSU and USC Upstate and have to be ready for the various offensive and defensive plays that both teams have. It has been a great season thus far and the team has performed exceptionally well. One of our biggest goals for the weekend is to make sure we continue to play at a high level as we are soon heading to the conference tournament.
“On Saturday, we will also honor our five seniors,” added Loeswick. “They have been the heart and soul of this team for a long time. They deserved a ton of credit for helping this program compete near the top of the Atlantic Sun Conference.”
Both matches can play a critical role in next week's A-Sun tournament seeding. UNF's already locked up a spot in the tournament and are currently fourth among eligible teams in the standings. The fifth and sixth seeds are still up for grabs with USC Upstate in the mix for one of those bids.
UNF has gone 6-1 during the second half of Atlantic Sun play and brings a four-match winning streak into the weekend. The Ospreys have a shot at making a little program history this weekend. With two wins, UNF will tally its most season wins since becoming a Division I program as well as notch its most Atlantic Sun Conference wins. With one win, the Ospreys would ties its most season wins for Division I, but still record its highest Atlantic Sun win total. UNF enters the weekend at 18-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference.
The Ospreys come off a powerful 3-0 sweep over cross-town rival Jacksonville last Saturday. Pridgeon led the Ospreys with an 18-kill, 11-dig double-double. It was Pridgeon's sixth-straight double-double and her 15th of the season. Additionally, Pridgeon's tallied at least 10 kills in 17 matches this year.
ETSU had perhaps its biggest win of the season last Saturday with a five-set victory at home over A-Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast. The Bucs come into the weekend on a four-match winning streak, but is just 4-7 on the road and has conference away losses at Mercer (Sept. 18), Florida Gulf Coast (Sept. 28), USC Upstate (Oct. 19) and Lipscomb (Oct. 26). ETSU remains the Atlantic Sun's top blocking team with 303.0 total blocks and a 2.7 blocks-per-set average. Meredith Hardy (1.42 blocks per set) and Khadijah Wiley (1.03 blocks per set) are two of the A-Sun's top three blockers, while Megan Devine has a conference-leading 4.06 kills per set. Devine is also the only A-Sun player with over 400 kills this season.
ETSU leads the all-time series 9-3 and has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
USC Upstate remains in a tight race with Mercer, Jacksonville and Kennesaw State for the last two bids into the Atlantic Sun Tournament. However, the Spartans have gone 1-4 in their last five matches and come off a 3-0 loss to Mercer at home on Tuesday. Saturday's match ends a three-matches-in-three-days road swing for the Spartans, who also play at Savannah State (Thursday) and Jacksonville (Friday). USC Upstate has the Atlantic Sun's top aces average (1.44 per set) and is second in digs (17.74 per set). Kayla McAvoy leads the Spartans with 3.32 kills per set and 65 total blocks. Meanwhile, Lexi Gober and Emily Sanders have split the setting responsibilities, averaging 5.80 and 5.00 assists per set, respectively. Sanders also leads the team with 4.38 digs per set.
The most-play series in UNF's history, the Ospreys hold a commanding 28.5 advantage in the all-time series.
