JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Sparked by a strong second half performance, the North Florida basketball team claimed their second win in three days handing Florida A&M a 72-47 loss Thursday night at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (3-4) extended their current home win streak to six games after outscoring the Rattlers (1-6), 33-17, over the final 20 minutes of play. UNF used a 10-0 surge midway through the half to seize control of the contest.
UNF placed four players in double-digits led by 18 from Parker Smith. Charles McRoy finished with a season-best 14 point effort while Travis Wallace and freshman BaeBae Daniels chipped in 12 apiece. For Daniels, who also swatted three shots, it marked his first career double-digit performance.
Jamie Adams tallied 13 points as the lone FAMU player to reach double figures.
“I was extremely proud of our effort,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “We still have some improvements to make but it was a good win. I felt like we got good production from the post tonight. I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff and players for getting prepared with such a quick turnaround. The team did a great job of executing the game plan and knowing the other team's personnel. We continue to grow and improve and that is the important thing at this time of the year.”
UNF raced out to a quick start grabbing a 20-8 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. The Ospreys maintained a double-digit lead for most of the opening stanza but a 7-0 spurt to close the period allowed the Rattlers to trim the margin to nine, 39-30, at intermission.
North Florida opened the second half with a 10-4 run then added a 10-0 surge minutes later to gain control. UNF kept a comfortable lead the rest of the game as FAMU could not draw closer than 19 points down the stretch.
The Ospreys posted their second straight win on the boards, outrebounding the Rattlers, 38-29. UNF also forced 19 turnovers and limited FAMU to just 2-of-12 from the three-point line including an 0-7 performance in the second half.
North Florida concludes its three games in five days stretch Saturday when the Ospreys visit No. 21 Minnesota.
