About SunTrust River City Rumble
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball begins its final homestand of the regular season in a big way on Saturday when the Ospreys host cross-town rival Jacksonville at UNF Arena in this season's second SunTrust River City Rumble meeting between the two teams. Match time is at 5 p.m.
“Anytime you play your rival, it's an important match,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “This rivalry brings out a strong intensity in us and Jacksonville as well as both teams' fan bases. We saw it earlier this season and played in a fun atmosphere.”
UNF captured this season's first barrel point with a 3-1 win at Jacksonville on Sept. 28. Carolyn Jenkins posted a rare kill-block double-double, tallying 13 kills and a career-high 10 blocks to pace the Ospreys.
“Jacksonville is a team that you can't take lightly,” added Loeswick. “They've picked up some great wins down the stretch, including a five-setter at Kennesaw State last weekend. However, we know there's a little more at stake with this match and we are ready to play some great volleyball and hopefully get a barrel point for UNF on Saturday.”
The Ospreys went 3-0 during its final road swing of the season and have won six of their last seven matches. In those seven matches, the Ospreys have made more kills (381-276) and outhit their opponents (.239 to .147). Additionally, UNF's hit over .300 in two of those matches, recording a .388 hitting percentage against Bethune-Cookman on Oct. 16 and a .345 hitting percentage at Kennesaw State last Friday.
UNF's coming off a 3-1 win at Stetson on Tuesday night. Setter Britt Claessens had an impressive showing on both offense and defense. Claessens registered 55 assists – her highest for a four-set match this season – and a career-high 25 digs.
Jacksonville's won four of their last five, but comes off a 3-0 loss at Atlantic Sun leader Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night. Earlier this week, Sammie Strausbaugh was tabbed the conference's Player of the Week. Strausbaugh had 56 kills and 21 digs last week to help the Dolphins to their first three-match winning streak of the season. Strausbaugh leads Jacksonville in kills with 303 on the season and a 2.94 kill-per-set average.
Saturday's match will also play a critical role for both teams in potential berths for the Atlantic Sun Tournament that's in two weeks. With an 8-7 record, UNF can clinch a spot in the tournament with a win on Saturday, either weekend splits or two losses by USC Upstate (5-8 A-Sun record), Kennesaw State (5-9 A-Sun) or Mercer (5-9 A-Sun) or if any one of those three teams reach 10 losses. Meanwhile, Jacksonville at a 5-10 record is still right in the mix for a bid to the Tournament.
UNF holds a 12-9 advantage in the all-time series with the Dolphins and have won the last four matches between the two teams.
