NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Postseason play begins for the University of North Florida volleyball team at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Championships on Thursday at Lipscomb's Allen Arena. The fourth-seeded Ospreys open play at the tournament in the first round against fifth-seeded Jacksonville.
“This is another exciting week. From day one, our goal has been to put us in a position to win the Atlantic Sun Championship,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “We reached the first part of that goal by making the tournament. The second part of the goal – winning the championship – will be very challenging.”
It marks the third-straight year in which the Ospreys are playing in the Atlantic Sun Championships. In each of the previous two seasons, UNF's been seeded sixth. This year, UNF earned its highest seeding of the Atlantic Sun Championships.
Thursday's match will be the third meeting this season between UNF and Jacksonville. The Ospreys, who lead 13-9 in the all-time series, won a pair of thrilling matches over the Dolphins during the regular season. UNF took the first match 3-1 at Jacksonville's Swisher Gymnasium on Sept. 28 and then swept the Dolphins 3-0 at UNF Arena in the second meeting on Nov. 3.
“We open the tournament with Jacksonville,” said Loeswick. “Both regular season matches with JU were played with such a high intensity by both teams because the stakes are high with barrel points on the line. The stakes are still high on Thursday, but now it's the chance to move on to the semifinals against Florida Gulf Coast. I expect Thursday's match will include the same high-level competitiveness, if not more, that was already seen by both teams in the regular season. It should be a fun match!”
UNF finished out the regular season with a pair of wins over ETSU and USC Upstate. The Ospreys rallied for a five-set win over ETSU on Friday night and then closed out the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of the Spartans on Senior Day. UNF has won its last six matches, which is the Ospreys' second-longest winning streak of the season. Earlier this year, UNF rattled of seven-straight wins, its longest winning streak of its Division I years.
The Atlantic Sun Conference announced its postseason honors and awards on Tuesday. Senior Nicole Baran was selected as the conference's Libero of the Year, which also landed her on the All-Atlantic Sun First-Team. Senior Paige Pridgeon collected her fourth postseason honor and joined Baran on the All-Conference First-Team. Meanwhile, earlier today, Baran and senior Dagnija Medina were among the 10 players named Volleyball Academic All-Conference.
Jacksonville also ended the regular season with wins against both ETSU and USC Upstate, taking a pair of five-set victories from both teams. The two wins allowed the Dolphins to secure a spot in the Atlantic Sun Championships. Jacksonville also took a mid-week, non-conference win over Bethune-Cookman in order to bring a three-match winning streak into the Atlantic Sun Championships.
It has been a big week for the Dolphins' Sammie Strausbaugh, who was named the A-Sun's Freshman of the Year on Tuesday and was also listed to the All-Freshman Team with teammate Gabriela Roman. Strausbaugh also picked up her second Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honor on Monday. She is Dolphins' team leader in kills (360 kills, 3.03 kills/set) and aces (34, 0.29 aces/set) and is second in digs (286, 2.40 digs/set).
The UNF-Jacksonville match is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. EST/7:30 p.m. CST. Winner of the UNF-Jacksonville match will face top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast in Friday's semifinals at 8:30 p.m., EST/7:30 p.m. CST.
