North Florida Starts Strong at Brickyard Golf Championship

MACON, Ga. – The No. 42 ranked North Florida golf team carded its best round of the fall Friday to climb to second-place after opening round action at the Brickyard Collegiate Championship hosted by Mercer.
The Ospreys fired a five-under-par 283 and are just three strokes behind tournament leader Georgia. Sophomore Joey Petronio led a trio of UNF linksters with under-par scores on day one carding a three-under 69. Petronio is currently tied for second in the individual medalist competition only one shot behind the leader.
Joining Petronio in red figures were redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock with a two-under 70 (T-9th) and true freshman Austin Padova at one-under 71 (T-12th). Freshman Joe Stepnes finished the round tied for 24th at 73 (+1) while sophomore MJ Maguire rounded out the Osprey lineup tied for 45th at 75 (+3). Senior Joey Marino, who is playing as an individual, is tied for 67th after a round of 78 (+6).
No. 4 ranked Georgia shot an eight-under 280 to pace the field followed by North Florida, Princeton (286), Kansas (288), No. 15 Georgia Tech (289), Chattanooga (291), No. 35 Virginia Tech (291), No. 46 Colorado State (293), Augusta State (295), Mercer (296), No. 40 Oklahoma (299), South Florida (300), Georgia State (301), College of Charleston (301) and Air Force (312).
The Bulldogs' Nicholas Reach posted a four-under 68 to grab a one-shot edge on a trio of golfers including Petronio.
North Florida continues play at the Brickyard Collegiate in second round action Saturday beginning at 10:10 a.m. off tee No. 1 of Brickyard at Riverside. Fans can follow all the action live online at www.golfstat.com.
