KENNESAW, Ga. – The final road swing of the regular season starts this weekend as University of North Florida volleyball travels to Kennesaw State and Mercer. Including this weekend, the Ospreys have three away matches left on their schedule.
“Both Kennesaw State and Mercer are two tough teams that have several offensive and defensive options,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “This weekend's matches are two important ones in terms of conference standings and could very well determine who gets left out of the Atlantic Sun Tournament at the end of the season. We have been back at work preparing for these two matches and are ready for the weekend.”
UNF wrapped up a four-match homestand on Tuesday and went 3-1 during that stretch at UNF Arena. The Ospreys picked up key Atlantic Sun Conference wins over Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky last weekend before falling to league leader Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday.
This weekend's matches play a critical role in the Atlantic Sun standings and potential bids to the A-Sun Tournament. UNF, Kennesaw State and Mercer all enter the weekend with 5-7 conference records and tied at sixth in the standings. The top six eligible teams advance to the conference tournament.
Kennesaw State plays at home for the final time with two matches this weekend. Friday night's match with UNF will be the Owls' Pink Match. The Owls will attempt to snap a four-match losing skid at home and is just 2-5 in home conference matches. However, Kennesaw State has two players that are among the A-Sun's top three offensive and defensive players, respectively. Baylee Strachan is third in the A-Sun in hitting with a .338 percentage. Strachan will be the final of the A-Sun's top four hitters that the Ospreys will have faced in a week. On defense, Camille Pedraza is third in digs with a 4.49 dig-per-set average.
Kennesaw State leads the all-time series 6-3 and won this season's earlier match 3-0.
Mercer will celebrate Senior Day against UNF on Saturday. The Bears have gone to five sets in four of the last seven matches and are 2-2 in five-setters during that span. Their first five-set match of that stretch was their 3-2 win at UNF on Oct. 5. Mercer has spent most of the month of October on the road and enters this weekend with a 0-1 mark at home this month after falling 3-0 to USC Upstate on Oct. 16. The Atlantic Sun's top digging team with 18.06 digs per set, Mercer also has the conference's digs leader in Emily Rochefort, who is averaging 5.38 digs per set.
UNF holds a 9-7 edge in the all-time series with Mercer.
Friday night's match at Kennesaw State is set for 7 p.m., while the UNF-Mercer match on Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
