JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida volleyball opens a four-match homestand when the Ospreys host Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m. Tuesday evening at UNF Arena. The match will have a pink theme to promote Breast Cancer Awareness and fans are encouraged to wear pink.
“We are looking forward to our pink match tomorrow,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “Breast Cancer Awareness is a great cause and hopefully tomorrow's match provides an opportunity to learn more about fighting breast cancer. It affects almost everyone and we are happy to join the cause to keep it at the forefront of people's minds.”
Tuesday night will also be UNF's last non-conference match of the regular season. Prior to this season, two of UNF's last three non-conference finales have been against Bethune-Cookman. Meanwhile, this year, the Ospreys are 8-4 against non-conference opponents, which includes a 3-0 sweep of Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 11.
The Ospreys, who lead the all-time series with Bethune-Cookman 13-1, are coming off a split weekend as they defeated USC Upstate 3-2 Friday night, but were tripped up at ETSU on Saturday. Senior Carolyn Jenkins had a stellar weekend with 36 kills and a .379 hitting percentage. Jenkins made the final two kills in the match at USC Upstate en route to totaling a career-high tying 19 kills. She then followed that up with a 17-kill performance at ETSU.
In the midst of a nine-match road swing, Bethune-Cookman is still searching for its first non-conference win of the season. The Lady Wildcats picked up three-straight MEAC wins from Sept. 30-Oct. 7, but were tripped up in its last two matches. So far, Bethune-Cookman is 0-4 against Atlantic Sun teams and fell 3-1 to Florida Gulf Coast last Tuesday. Krysta Gardner leads the team in both kills (251) and aces (31).
To go along with the Breast Cancer Awareness promotion, Donna Deegan from The Donna Foundation will be speaking during the break in between the second and third set. Additionally, a limited number of shirts will be for sale for $10.
