JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team embarks on their final road trip of the regular season this weekend, as they prep for road matches at Kennesaw State and Mercer.
The Ospreys are coming off their two biggest wins of the year, knocking off then-first-place Florida Gulf Coast on Friday, 2-0, before continuing their run with a 2-1 victory over Stetson on Sunday evening. With the wins, UNF moved into a tie for first place in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Kennesaw State (Fri. Oct. 12, 7 p.m.) will bring a 7-6-1 record, including a 3-1-1 mark in the A-Sun, into its match with UNF. Last weekend, the Owls grabbed a pair of road wins at Lipscomb and Northern Kentucky. Danielle Gray leads Kennesaw State on offense, having scored seven goals in 2012, third-most in the A-Sun.
Although the Owls lead the rivalry with a 9-1-1 record against UNF, the Ospreys captured the most recent contest, a 1-0 win at Hodges Stadium last season. Then-junior Kathryne Husted volleyed home the only goal of that match in the 24th minute to give UNF the victory.
Mercer (Sun. Oct. 14, 1 p.m.) enters this weekend's action as one of only three A-Sun teams, along with UNF and Jacksonville, who have yet to record a loss in conference play at 3-0-2, along with a 9-3-3 overall record. The Bears are also undefeated (5-0-1) at home this season. Lauren Gassie has led Mercer on the offensive end, tallying six goals and four assists across 15 games.
UNF leads the all-time series with the Bears, 5-2. The Ospreys have won the previous three contests and have not allowed a goal in any of them. In last year's 4-0 win at Hodges Stadium, then sophomore Carolina Lencina found the back of the net twice to lead the Ospreys to a victory. Jill Holdsworth and Lauren Hopfensperger also scored second half goals in the contest.
