KENNESAW, Ga. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team dropped their first Atlantic Sun Conference game of the year as they fell at Kennesaw State, 4-2, on Friday evening.
“This was a tough one for us,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “A few different bounces and things could have been different, but we think we're definitely capable of playing better.”
KSU opened the scoring in the eighth minute, as Danielle Gray dribbled into the box and fired a 15-yard shot across the goal from the right side to put the Owls up 1-0.
Just before halftime, the Ospreys were able to grab an equalizer off the head of sophomore Alexandra Herman. In the 43rd minute, freshman Amanda Fischler sent in a cross from the right side that Herman was able to nod into the top of the net for her first career goal.
Much of the first half was spent in the midfield, as both teams combined for just eight shots in the first half. The Owls' goal was their only shot on goal in the opening period.
Katrina Frost was able to put KSU back on top just after the break. After UNF goalkeeper Brittany Hahn punched away a cross, Frost headed home the rebound from 15 yards to give the Owls a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute. In the 71st minute, Nicole Calder doubled KSU's advantage when she headed in a corner kick to put the Owls up 3-1.
Junior Keara Murphy pulled the Ospreys within a goal in the 74th minute after she finished in the box after a nice combo between Herman and sophomore Alexi Zaremba. It was Murphy's second goal of the year and cut the deficit to 3-2.
Despite the Ospreys spending much of the final 15 minutes in the attacking third, Frost sealed the win for the Owls in the 87th minute when she scored from 45 yards out to give KSU a 4-2 lead.
The game was evenly-played throughout, as the teams both ended the match with 11 shots. UNF held a slight edge in corner kicks, tallying five to KSU's four.
“You never like losing, especially in conference,” Hamilton said. “We just have to get back to work and come out and get a win on Sunday afternoon.”
With the loss, the Ospreys fall to 6-7-2, with a 4-1-1 mark in A-Sun play. Kennesaw State also moves to 4-1-1 in the A-Sun, with a 8-6-1 overall record. The match snaps the Ospreys' five-game unbeaten streak, dating back to a Sept. 14 match at nationally-ranked UCF.
The Ospreys are next in action on Sunday, Oct. 14, as they travel down the road for another away match at Mercer. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. and a link to live stats is available on UNFOspreys.com.
