SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of North Florida volleyball returns to the road to close out the first half of Atlantic Sun play with weekend matches at USC Upstate (Friday) and ETSU (Saturday).
“These are two critical matches against two challenging opponents,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “Both USC Upstate and ETSU are solid defensive teams, but also have several key offensive components. We have been hard at work this week to make sure we are prepared for the weekend.”
UNF plays away from the River City for the first time in over two weeks. The Ospreys played their last four matches within Jacksonville and have not played out-of-town since visiting Florida Gulf Coast on Sept. 25. UNF will attempt to rebound from a pair of losses last weekend and get its first road conference win of the season. In the latest set of NCAA statistical rankings, the Ospreys were represented in the Top 50 in several categories. As a team, UNF is 32nd in digs per set (17.22). Dagnija Medina, who leads the Atlantic Sun in aces, is 22nd in aces per set (0.46), while Nicole Baran is 29th in digs per set (5.28).
USC Upstate comes off a 3-0 sweep of Kennesaw State on Tuesday, allowing the Spartans to rebound from two losses last weekend. So far this season, six of the Spartans' seven wins have come in the form of a 3-0 sweep. USC Upstate is another tough defensive team, ranking second in the A-Sun with 17.67 digs per set. Individually, the Spartans have one of the A-Sun's top hitters in Kayla McAvoy, who has a .333 hitting percentage that is third in the conference.
The series with USC Upstate is the most played series in UNF's history. Friday night's match will be the 33rd meeting between the two teams. UNF holds a 27-5 advantage in the all-time series, but USC Upstate won last season's only meeting 3-0 on Oct. 7 in Spartanburg.
ETSU enters the weekend coming off a 3-1 win over Mercer on Tuesday night and is currently 5-1 in home matches this season. Blocks are a key part to the Bucs, who lead all A-Sun teams in blocking (205. 5 total blocks; 2.60 blocks per set) and have the conference's top two blockers in Meredith Hardy (1.39 blocks per set) and Khadijah Wiley (1.02 blocks per set). Meanwhile, offensively, Megan Devine leads the A-Sun in kills with 318 on the season and a 4.03 kill-per-set average.
ETSU holds an 8-3 advantage over UNF in the all-time series and has won the last four meetings between the two teams.
The match between UNF and USC Upstate is set for a 7 p.m., start on Friday night. The UNF-ETSU match is scheduled for 3 p.m., on Saturday.
