JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After eight-consecutive road matches, University of North Florida volleyball returns to UNF Arena for the first time in three-and-a-half weeks on Tuesday night when the Ospreys host Stetson in a mid-week, Atlantic Sun Conference match at 7 p.m.
“We are looking forward to playing at home in front of friends, family and Osprey Nation,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “I don't think Stetson's record is a reflection of their level. They have some very good players who we will have to account for and try to limit them offensively.”
While away from its home court for the last few weeks, the Ospreys did make a return to the River City on Friday night when they took a 3-1 match from cross-town rival Jacksonville at Swisher Gymnasium. The win was UNF's first Atlantic Sun win of the season after starting conference play with three of the league's top teams. Senior Carolyn Jenkins posted a rare kill-block double-double against the Dolphins, tallying 13 kills and a career-high 10 blocks. Nicole Baran got closer to becoming UNF's all-time digs leader. With 21 digs at Jacksonville, Baran brought her career total up to 1,612 digs and is just five away from breaking Tara Taylor's mark of 1,616 that has stood since the 2006 season.
Stetson attempts to halt a 10-match skid and searches for its first win since a 3-2 win at Norfolk State on Sept. 7 during the Spartan Classic. The Hatters come off a heart-breaking five-set loss to ETSU that saw Stetson up 2-0 through the first two sets. However, during the ETSU match, Monique Russell became Stetson's all-time leader in digs and enters the week with 1,291. On the season, Russell's accumulated 352 digs. Kaley Melville's paced the Hatter offense with a team-best 229 kills. Meanwhile, Stetson's split time between its two setters – Kelli Carneal and Kayla Weller. Carneal's put up 363 assists this season, while Weller's tallied 320.
UNF holds a 12-3 advantage in the all-time series and has not lost to Stetson since the second match of the 2008 season. The Ospreys have emerged victorious in the last five meetings between the two teams.
Tickets for UNF volleyball matches are $5 for Adults; $3 for Youth 17-under, Senior Citizens 55+, Active Military and UNF Faculty/Staff. UNF students with a valid Osprey1 card and children under 2 are free. For more information about tickets, click here.
