Late Goals Cost Men’s Soccer Against FAU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Florida Atlantic used a pair of goals in the final three and a half minutes of the match to record a come from behind 2-1 victory over the University of North Florida on Sunday afternoon at Hodges Stadium. The Ospreys fell to 1-6-0 on the season, while the Owls improved to 4-3-1.
Offensively, North Florida outshot FAU 12-to-7 and took six shots on goal compared to five by the Owls. Josh Ciambella netted his first goal of the season in the match, while Casey Caronis registered his first collegiate save. Seven different UNF players recorded shots in the match with four different players taking multiple shots. Five different players for the Ospreys had shots on goal with Pedro D'Avila leading the team with two. As a team, the Ospreys recorded three saves compared to five by the Owls.
North Florida broke the scoreless tie in the first half in the 29th minute of the match. Ciambella finished off a give-and-go with Caronis, going one-on-one with the FAU keeper for a six-yard score. The goal was the first of Ciambella's career and gave the Ospreys a 1-0 advantage.
Neither team was able to score in the closing minutes of the second half and the Ospreys took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The Osprey defense was solid in the second half, limiting the Owls to just one shot in the first 40 minutes of the period. FAU's Ramin Rahemi scored the equalizer in the 87th minute after a corner kick was bobbled around by both teams. Just one minute later, Stan Castaldo took a pass from Michael Dunbar, Jr. from 18 yards out and connected on a short goal to the back right post.
UNF's Luis Daniel Camejo managed to get a shot off with just under 30 seconds remaining, but the potential match-tying goal was saved by the FAU keeper, thwarting a Osprey comeback.
North Florida returns to action on Friday, Sept. 23 with a match against UC Riverside at Hodges Stadium. Kickoff for the match is slated for 7 p.m.
