PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Under windy conditions and cooler temperatures play concluded in the 20th annual John Hayt Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at Sawgrass Country Club with No-18-ranked University of Arkansas earning the team championship.
No. 42-ranked North Florida, the tournament host and defending champion, posted a final round 303 to finish in 12th-place with a 54-hole total 904. Sophomore Kevin Phelan led the way for UNF finishing tied for 17th at 220 including a final round 73 (+1).
Defending individual champion, Joe Byun finished tied for 41st at 226 following a 79 on Tuesday. The rest of UNF's lineup for the event included Kevin Aylwin tied for 46th (227), Major Forbess tied for 56th (231) and Jacob Davidson tied for 74th (239).
A trio of Osprey linksters participated in the event as individuals including Joey Marino (236/73rd), Brant DeLongy (249/82nd) and Chris Kennedy (250/83rd).
"I'm disappointed with our finish in our home event," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We struggled with our short game and that really hurt our scores. We just need to refocus and get back to work on some fundamentals as we look to move forward. We have several more really challenging tournaments coming up this month."
The Razorbacks rallied on the final day firing a five-under 283 finishing with a three-day 867 and two shots in front of runner-up No. 8 Auburn at 869. No. 10 LSU finished third at 871 followed by No. 34 UCF (879), No. 41 Tennessee (882), No. 3 Florida and Ole Miss (885), No. 43 Tulsa (890), No. 38 TCU (892), Coastal Carolina (895), Mercer (898), UNF, Georgia Southern (910), Jacksonville (912) and UAB (913).
Florida's Phillip Choi carded a two-under 70 Tuesday breaking a three-way tie atop the individual medalist competition to claim the title with a three-day tally of 209 (-7). Choi was the only player to post sub-par scores all three days of the event.
Auburn's Blayne Barber and Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas shared individual runner-up honors at 212 (-4).
The North Florida golf team will next return to action Mar. 13-14 at the General Hackler Championship hosted by Coastal Carolina in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
