JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's basketball team hits the road once again, this time heading south to face Florida Atlantic on Wednesday evening at FAU Arena.
UNF looks to bounce back after suffering an 86-30 setback at West Virginia on Saturday. Freshman Destinee Smith led the Ospreys with a career-high tying eight points. Wednesday night will be the Ospreys' sixth road game of the season and their second away game against an in-state opponent. Five UNF players that hail from the South Florida area - Fabiola Josil and Raneisha Lamar (Coral Springs), Taylor Smith (Sunrise), Chandler Merkerson (Pembroke Pines) and Jasmine Hicks (Miami).
Florida Atlantic will try to snap a five-game losing skid on Wednesday as the Owls' last win was against Bethune-Cookman on Nov. 20. However, the Owls have scored at least 60 points in their last six games, including Saturday's 70-63 loss to Saint Louis at FAU Arena. Latavia Dempsey has come off the bench in each of Florida Atlantic's eight games to average a team-best 10.0 points per game.
Wednesday will be the fifth meeting between the two teams. While Florida Atlantic holds a 3-1 advantage in the series, it was UNF that emerged victorious in the last meeting. Larkira Jones made a pair of free throws in the final seconds as UNF held off the Owls 63-61 at UNF Arena on Nov. 19, 2010.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
