FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team fell just short of their first-ever Atlantic Sun Championship game, falling 2-1 to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday evening. Freshman Kathryn Shafer scored the lone goal for the Ospreys.
For the first half, neither team could grab a firm hold of the match, tallying just six shots between them at halftime with FGCU holding a 4-2 advantage. Both high-powered offenses were held to less-than-favorable chances by the opposing defense.
Early in the second half, however, the tide shifted drastically in Florida Gulf Coast's favor with two goals in quick succession. Midfielder Shannen Wacker put the Eagles up 1-0 when she received a through ball from forward Gina Petracco and chipped a ball over sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey and into the back of the net in the 50th minute.
Petracco, the 2011 A-Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year, then doubled FGCU's lead less than six minutes later when she pounced on a ball that Dorsey had deflected and buried a shot into an open net to secure a 2-0 lead.
Shafer gave UNF a chance when she scored her second goal in as many games in the 81st minute. After controlling the ball inside the box, the freshman took a dribble and beat goalkeeper Stephanie Powers, the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, just inside the left post to cut the Eagles' lead to a single goal.
The Ospreys managed two more shots in the final eight minutes of play, including a strike from sophomore forward Carolina Lencina with just 35 seconds left that forced an athletic save out of Powers, but they could not find an equalizer.
For the match, UNF was outshot 11-9 by the Eagles, but the Ospreys earned three corners while holding FGCU to zero.
Dorsey tallied four saves for UNF in the loss, while Powers also recorded four for the Eagles. FGCU will play Mercer in the A-Sun Championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
With the loss, the Ospreys end their 2011 season with a record of 9-10-2, good for their best winning percentage and most victories since the 2006 campaign.
