JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team, coming off their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament victory, heads to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday evening for a semi-final matchup against the Eagles.
Last week, the Ospreys held on after freshman forward Kathryn Shafer scored her first career goal to give UNF a 1-0 victory at Belmont in the opening round of the A-Sun Tournament.
Shafer tallied the only offense UNF would need in the 37th minute on an outstanding individual effort. After receiving a pass, the freshman dribbled up the left side through the Belmont defense and beat goalkeeper Nicole Berner to the near post to give the Ospreys their 1-0 lead.
After halftime, UNF kept the pedal to the floor, racking up nine shots in the first 16 minutes and constantly threatening to double their lead.
The most dangerous Belmont chance came with just nine seconds left on the clock, when UNF was whistled for a handball roughly 25 yards from their goal. Gretchen Sutch, a second-team All-A-Sun selection for the Bruins, stepped up and drilled a free kick towards the upper-right corner of the goal that forced UNF goalkeeper Megan Dorsey to dive for and tip over the crossbar to preserve the quarterfinal victory.
On Friday, the Ospreys will face top-seeded FGCU for the second time this season. In their match earlier this season, the Ospreys fell 4-0 to FGCU, giving up a trio of first-half goals, including one just 14 seconds before halftime. The Eagles then completed their scoring in the 79th minute.
Senior midfielder Denisse Soltero led the UNF offense on the evening with a pair of shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Dorsey was forced to make eight saves in just 73 minutes of play before giving way to freshman Rachel Beninati.
The Eagles are led on offense by a pair of upperclassmen. Senior Gina Petracco, a first-team all-conference selection leads the team with seven goals to her name, while junior defender Ashley Ciesielczyk has tallied a conference-leading 12 assists on the year. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Powers also grabbed the A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year award after recording 11 shutouts and a 0.70 goals against average.
The match, taking place at FGCU Soccer Complex, will kick off at 7 p.m. on Friday evening. Live stats and video streaming will be available.
