JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team faces crosstown rival Jacksonville in the SunTrust River City Rumble rematch Friday at 7 p.m. in JU's Swisher Gymnasium.
The Ospreys (12-15, 3-7 Atlantic Sun) and Dolphins (12-15, 4-6) are battling for one of the final spots in the upcoming Atlantic Sun Championship Tournament. Jacksonville is one game ahead in the standings but UNF has the current tiebreaker edge after defeating JU in the season's first meeting.
UNF has won four of its last five matches but enters the clash following a disappointing loss last Friday at Mercer. JU has dropped five of its last seven with both wins coming in the last three contests including a win at Mercer on Saturday.
In the first meeting between the two at UNF Arena, Jacksonville built a 2-0 set lead before watching North Florida rally with three straight set wins to capture the match. Four of the five sets were decided by three points or less including the fifth frame which went into extra points before UNF claimed the 21-19 victory. Junior Paige Pridgeon had a career best match for the Ospreys finishing the night with 26 kills and 29 digs.
Pridgeon ranks fifth in the A-Sun for kills at 3.43 per set and 17th in digs with 2.93 dps. Freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi is listed sixth in assists with 8.85 per set, while junior libero Nicole Baran ranks fourth in the Atlantic Sun with 4.33 digs per set.
As a team, UNF ranks third in the conference in blocking at 1.79 blocks per set and is holding opponents to a .192 hitting percentage, also third best in the league. A trio of Osprey players are listed among the league's elite in blocking with Carolyn Jenkins ranked second (0.91 bps), Marija Pantovic 13th (0.76) and Dagnija Medina 17th (0.65).
With the earlier victory over JU, the Ospreys took a slim 10-9 lead in the all-time series with their archrival. The home team holds the edge in the match-up with UNF's last win at Jacksonville coming in 2006.
After facing JU, North Florida concludes its regular season slate with a pair of home matches against Florida Gulf Coast (Nov. 11) and Stetson (Nov. 12). The Atlantic Sun tournament is scheduled for Nov. 17-19 in Nashville, Tenn.
