JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida basketball team remained undefeated at home after posting a hard fought 69-60 victory over Jackson State Friday night at UNF Arena.
The win was the Ospreys (3-4) second straight and third home win of the season. Jackson State fell to 1-6 with the loss.
Junior Parker Smith led the way with 16 points, posting a perfect shooting performance that included going 5-for-5 from the three-point line. Travis Wallace and Jimmy Williams each chipped in 11 for UNF.
Jenirro Bush scored 20 points to pace a quartet of Tigers in double digits.
“I was proud of the resolve our guys played with tonight,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “We did some good things but we still have some areas to improve on. I thought we rebounded well and down the stretch we took our defensive intensity to another level. We just need to continue getting better.”
The Ospreys jumped out of the blocks scoring the first seven points of the game. After the hot start, UNF struggled through a four minute scoring drought as the Tigers clawed back into the game earning a tie at 14-all with 10:22 left in the first half.
North Florida bounced back using a 12-3 run to build a double-digit advantage, 30-19, with just under two minutes remaining in the period. The Ospreys carried a 30-23 lead into the halftime break.
UNF maintained a lead for much of the second half but could not deliver the knockout to a scrappy Tiger squad. JSU kept things close and even held a brief lead, 56-54, with 4:24 left in the game. Wallace converted an old-fashioned three-point play to put the Ospreys back in front for good.
The Ospreys outscored the Tigers 10-2 over the closing three minutes of play to secure the victory.
For the game, UNF out-rebounded JSU 38-28 as four different players pulled down five rebounds each to lead the effort. The Ospreys made 23-of-50 field goal attempts (46 percent), marking the second straight game the team has connected at better than 40 percent from the floor.
North Florida continues its four-game home stand Tuesday against Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. in UNF Arena.
