JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team heads to Belmont on Saturday afternoon for the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament. In their meeting earlier this year, the Ospreys drew 0-0 with the Bruins.
Last week, UNF fell to Jacksonville 2-1 in this year's edition of the River City Rumble, but secured the fifth seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
Sophomore forward Lauren Hopfensperger almost put UNF on the board early, as she grabbed a pass and fired a 1-on-1 shot that JU goalkeeper Sarah Sierra was just able to parry away for a cornerkick.
Though the Ospreys were down 2-0 in the 85th minute, Larrinaga gave UNF new life with her fifth goal of the season. Hopfensperger started the play, taking her defender deep into the box before hitting a low pass across the goal from the right side. Larrinaga collected the pass with her back to the goal, turned her defender and fired a left-footed shot past Sierra to cut the Dolphins' lead to 2-1.
Belmont, coming off of a 1-0 upset of top-seeded Florida Gulf Coast that vaulted them into fourth place, finished its regular season with an overall record of 8-7-1, including a 5-3-1 mark in conference play.
On offense, Belmont has spread their scoring around, as six players have contributed at least two goals. Senior Gretchen Sutch, a second-team All-Atlantic Sun selection, leads the team with nine points (3 G, 3 A) on the year.
The Bruins own a 3-2-2 lead in the all-time series against UNF, including a 0-0, double-overtime draw earlier this season at Hodges Stadium. Both of the previous two games in the series have gone past regulation, as the Ospreys defeated Belmont 2-1 in double overtime last year in Nashville.
In the match earlier this season, UNF settled for a scoreless draw despite outshooting the Bruins 18-5. The Ospreys did not concede a shot on goal on the evening. UNF controlled the game throughout, providing constant pressure down the flanks and maintaining a high defensive line to make it difficult for Belmont to possess the ball for long periods of time.
The match, held at E.S. Rose Park on the campus of Belmont, will kick off at 3 p.m. (2 p.m. CT). Live stats and streaming will be available.
