MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida volleyball team returns to conference play Friday with an important road match against Mercer at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys (12-14, 3-6 Atlantic Sun) are riding a season best four-match win streak into their meeting with Mercer. UNF is currently tied for sixth in the conference standings with just four matches remaining in the regular season. The top six teams qualify for the postseason A-Sun Tournament.
A victory at Mercer would allow UNF to not only equal the highest season win total in Coach Kevin Campbell's tenure but also give the team a five-game win streak for the first time since 2008.
During the current streak, North Florida is hitting .219 as a team while limiting opponent's to just a .111 hitting percentage. The Ospreys are averaging almost two blocks per set (1.97) and pounding out 13.93 kills per set. The UNF defense is also averaging 18.73 digs per set.
Junior Paige Pridgeon has been on fire averaging 4.20 kills and 4.80 digs during the stretch. For the season, Pridgeon ranks fifth in the A-Sun for kills at 3.43 kps and 17th in digs with 2.92 dps. Junior Carolyn Jenkins has also raised her level of play hitting .440 while posting 3.53 kills and 1.00 blocks per set.
As a team, UNF ranks third in the conference in blocking at 1.81 blocks per set. A trio of Osprey players are listed among the league's elite in blocking with Jenkins ranked second (0.92 bps), Marija Pantovic 11th (0.77) and Dagnija Medina 16th (0.66).
Freshman setter Casey Giovanazzi is listed fourth in assists with 8.95 per set, while junior libero Nicole Baran ranks fourth in the Atlantic Sun with 4.38 digs per set.
Mercer enters the match at 9-16 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Bears have won three of their last four matches including a 3-1 win at USC Upstate on Saturday. The Ospreys lead the all-time series with Mercer, 9-5, including a 3-1 victory earlier this season at UNF Arena. However, UNF dropped a 3-1 decision in their last visit to the University Center.
Following the Mercer match, UNF has a week off from competition before battling crosstown rival Jacksonville in the River City Rumble rematch at Swisher Gymnasium on Nov. 4.
