JACKSONVILLE -- The North Florida volleyball team extended its current win streak to four matches Tuesday night with a straight set 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-16) victory over in-state foe Bethune-Cookman at UNF Arena.
With the win, UNF improves to 12-14 overall and 6-3 at UNF Arena including a perfect 4-0 mark at home against non-conference foes. BCU falls to 9-15 on the season with their second loss of the year to the Ospreys.
Carolyn Jenkins led the way for UNF finishing with 16 kills and four blocks. The junior middle blocker committed just two hitting errors en route to a .500 hitting percentage for the match.
Junior Paige Pridgeon recorded her third straight and 14th overall double-double performance after collecting 12 kills and 16 digs. Nicole Baran added 12 digs and Marija Pantovic chipped in four blocks along the net.
“I'm proud of how we have stayed focused throughout the match and executed down the stretch recently,” said UNF head coach Kevin Campbell. “We have really good team chemistry right now. We continue to play consistently good and are limiting our highs and lows during a set and in the match as a whole. Paige is really keeping us stable with her mature leadership and competitive mindset.”
The opening set was closely contested until a five-point spurt midway through the frame allowed UNF to build a slight edge. The Ospreys would maintain a multi-point lead the remainder of the set even holding a 24-7 lead. Bethune turned back four set point opportunities before UNF closed the set on a kill by Marija Pantovic.
The Lady Wildcats seized the early momentum in set two jumping in front 9-3. UNF battled back trimming the deficit several times only to see BCU re-establish a comfortable cushion. Trailing 20-16, the Ospreys mounted a final charge eventually knotting the score at 23-23 on a Jenkins kill. Pridgeon and Jenkins tallied back-to-back attacking points to nail down the come from behind win.
UNF charged out of the break building a 10-5 advantage to start set three. The Ospreys kept pushing and led by as many as eight at 20-12 but the Lady Wildcats refused to quit clawing their way back with a pair of scoring runs. North Florida regrouped and scored the final three points to secure the 3-0 sweep.
The Ospreys return to Atlantic Sun Conference play Friday with an important match at Mercer.
