JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team played a solid match against crosstown rival Jacksonville, but a late penalty kick in the 73rd minute by the Dolphins proved to be the difference as the Ospreys dropped a 1-0 decision at the Ashley Sports Complex on Saturday evening.
Jacksonville took 16 shots compared to just six by North Florida, but the Dolphins registered just four shots on goal compared to a pair by the Ospreys. JU took five corners compared to none by UNF and the Dolphins were charged with seven offsides, while the Ospreys were called offsides once. The two teams combined for 25 fouls in the match with the Ospreys recording one more foul than the Dolphins.
Offensively, all six of the Ospreys shots came in the second half as UNF made several second half adjustments. Pedro D'Avila and Nick May led the team with two shots apiece, while Luis Daniel Camejo and Alek Slaveski each had a shot apiece. Camejo and Slaveski's shots each were on goal.
Defensively, Federico Bertele took the hard luck loss for the Ospreys, working 90 minutes at goal. The freshman keeper made his 12th consecutive start between the posts for North Florida. Bertele kept the high powered Dolphins' offense off of the scoreboard for the first 72 minutes of the match before the penalty kick. The UNF defense aided the rookie limiting the JU offense to just four shots on goal.
Neither team was able to scratch the scoreboard in the first half, taking a 0-0 tie into intermission. Despite controlling possession and recording six first half shots, Jacksonville had nothing to show for their efforts.
The score remained knotted at 0-0 until the 73rd minute. JU's Davide Faga was dribbling the ball down the right with a UNF defender running in stride with the midfielder. Faga drew a foul in the box prompting a penalty kick which the junior converted for the only goal of the match.
Following the goal by JU, the Ospreys were able to record four attempts at an equalizer. D'Avila and May's shot attempts were both blocked. The Dolphin's goalkeeper made a save on a shot by Slaveski. D'Avila's final attempt sailed high as the Ospreys were unable to force overtime.
North Florida returns to action with a pair of home matches to end the season. The Ospreys take on Stetson on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. at Hodges Stadium, before hosting Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
