
Stetson Spoils Soccer Senior Night

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team fell 2-0 to Stetson in the second to last regular season home match of the season on Friday night at Hodges Stadium. The match was Senior Night for the Ospreys, who honored their two seniors Julian Botella and Enrique Haeussler prior to the match.
Statistically, the match was nearly even with the Hatters holding a slight 7-to-6 edge on shots. Stetson took four shots on goal compared to two by North Florida with each team recording two saves on the night. UNF took a pair of corner kicks while Stetson did not attempt a corner. North Florida was charged with eight fouls compared to six by Stetson.
Haeussler recorded a team-high three shots on the night, while Mauricio Valderruten added two shots, including a shot on goal. Pedro D'Avila notched a shot that was on goal on the night.
Federico Bertele earned the start at goal, spending all 90-minutes between the posts for the Ospreys. The freshman notched a pair of saves on the night. He was assisted by solid defense who limited the Hatters to just seven total shots on the night.
North Florida was caught off guard early as Stetson's Joakim Helland wasted little time putting the Hatters on the scoreboard just under a minute into the match. Jonathan Mendoza intercepted a pass, sending the ball to Helland into the box and Helland sent it to the far post to put the visitors in front 1-0.
Both teams settled into a good rhythm and exchanged possessions over the next 29 minutes. In the 30th minute, Helland struck again as he intercepted a clearance attempt and shot to the far post from 15 yards out to increase the lead to 2-0.
The Ospreys were able to keep the Hatters out of the net for the final 15 minutes of the first half, but were unable to scratch the scoreboard and entered intermission down a pair of goals.
The second half was played nearly even. North Florida edged Stetson 4-to-3 in shots with both teams taking a shot on goal. The Ospreys took the only two corner kicks of the night in the second half, setting up a pair of good looks in front of the net. UNF was charged with one more foul than Stetson, 5-4, in the second half.
Despite the opportunities in the second half, the Ospreys were unable to score the elusive goal and dropped the 2-0 decision.
North Florida concludes the season with a match against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. at Hodges Stadium.
