JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team travels across town to face off against in-town rival Jacksonville at the Ashley Sports Complex on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys enter the match with a 1-12-0 overall record while the Dolphins are 7-5-2 on the year. UNF is 0-5-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play, while JU sits atop the conference standings with a 4-0-1 mark.
North Florida is 6-8-0 against Jacksonville since 1994 with a 5-3-0 (.625) record away from Hodges stadium, including a 3-3-0 (.500) clip at the Ashley Sports Complex. The match marks the second event this season in the SunTrust River City Rumble.
The SunTrust River City Rumble is a season-long series between Jacksonville's two Division I institutions – Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida. The UNF and JU battle annually for the “SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel,” which is awarded to the school with the most victories over the other during a school year. Each time the Ospreys and Dolphins face each other, the game will count toward the SunTrust River City Rumble standings.
In addition to the River City Rumble, the match is also the most recent installment of the Dennis Viollet Cup. Viollet was a striker for Manchester United in the 1950s and early 60s. He scored 178 goals in 291 games for United, ending his career as the all-time leading goal scorer in Manchester United history. Former North Florida head coach Ray Bunch and Viollet coached together at the club level until 1990, when Viollet took the reins of the Jacksonville University Dolphins, where he stayed until 1995. The annual University of North Florida/Jacksonville University soccer match has been contested for the Viollet Cup since 2001. Since the inception of the Viollet Cup, the series between the two teams is tied at 5-5-0.
The rivalry has been intense with 10 of the last 14 matches being decided by one goal. The last four meetings have each been decided by one goal with the visiting team winning the last five matches. North Florida has won the last two meetings between the two teams at the Ashley Sports Complex, claiming a 2-1 victory on Oct. 17, 2007 and a 2-1 win on Oct. 10, 2009.
Jacksonville enters the match with a six-match unbeaten streak. The Dolphins posted five consecutive wins before recording a 1-1 draw in their last match against Belmont. JU opened the streak with a 2-1 nonconference victory over Georgia Southern and proceeded with four consecutive ASun wins against Mercer (W, 2-1), USC Upstate (W, 3-0), East Tennessee State (W, 2-1) and Lipscomb (W, 2-1).
This weekend is important for the Ospreys if they want to finish among the top six teams in the league and advance to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Entering the weekend, no team in the conference has secured their spot in the upcoming conference tournament.
