
North Florida Falls to Belmont, 65-48

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell to Belmont, 65-48 on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the Curb Event Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Leading the Ospreys (2-11, 0-4 A-Sun) with a career-high 14 points was Taylor Smith. Jadhken Kerr added nine points for UNF while Juliemay Syquio tallied eight points and a team-best seven rebounds.
For the Bruins (6-8, 3-2 A-Sun), Haley Nelson led all scorers with 20 points while pulling down a game-best 12 rebounds. Cacy Burtnett added 16 points and Shaunda Strayhorn posted 10 points and handed out eight assists.
In the opening half, Belmont got out to an early 7-0 lead, but the Ospreys answered to tie the game at 10 at the 11:54 mark. The Bruins extended their lead to six (16-10), two minutes later, but Ospreys went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game, up 17-16 with 6:50 left in the half. The two teams traded baskets over the next several minutes, and the Bruins were up 22-21 with just over three minutes to go. Belmont closed out the half with a 7-0 run to take a 29-21 lead into the break.
Coming out of the break, Belmont extended its lead to 16 (42-26) with 12:31 on the clock. The Ospreys got it down to 11, 42-31, off a three pointer from Kerr at the 11:26 mark, but that is as close as they would come as the Bruins maintained the lead and took their largest, up 18 with 30 seconds left.
The Ospreys shot 34.7 percent (17-of-49) from the field including 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from behind the arc. Belmont hit 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the field and 36.4 percent (8-of-22).
UNF held the 39-32 advantage on the boards and both teams scored 10 points off second chance opportunities.
The Ospreys will remain in Nashville to face A-Sun foe Lipscomb on Monday, Jan. 10 in a 6 p.m. EST game at Allen Arena.
