JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to Florida A&M, 3-1 in a non-conference match on Saturday evening at UNF Arena.
UNF (2-12) was led by sophomore Paige Pridgeon and senior Jessica Catelano with 15 kills each. Pridgeon also posted 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the season. Sophomore Dagnija Medina added 11 kills and notched five blocks. Freshman Britt Claessens tallied 40 assists and on the defensive side Nicole Baran had 17 digs.
“I feel like we played good volleyball,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “We had good team chemistry, but we just didn't execute on serving or hitting. We gave them 34 points on missed serves and attack errors. We can't win a match when we give our opponents points like that. Our kill percentage was high and I like our team's chemistry we just have to take it to the next level as we start conference play next weekend.”
The Rattlers (1-11) were led by Pamela Barrera with 14 kills. Katherine Huanec had 12 kills and Maria Ceccarelli tallied 11. Diana Gonzalez had 39 assists while Susan Egoavil had 24 digs.
In the opening set the two teams traded points early, but the Rattlers went on a run, taking a 20-13 lead. The Ospreys rallied late, tying the set at 22 behind the serving of Chelsea Rabe and Catelano. UNF score the final three points to claim the 25-22 win and 1-0 lead in the match.
The two teams again went back and forth to open the set, but FAMU went on a run to go up 18-10. UNF again looked to make a run, cutting the gap to five at 21-16, but the Rattlers held on for a 25-18 win to tie the set, 1-1.
UNF held the early lead in the third set, at 9-6. The Ospreys held on to the lead, but led by no more than two over the next several rallies. FAMU went on a short run and tied the set up at 20. UNF was unable to answer with a run and the Rattlers secured the 25-23 win and a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, FAMU got out early, taking a 14-7 lead. UNF closed the gap to three at 17-14, but the Rattlers went on a 5-0 run to take a 22-14 lead. FAMU secured the match with a 25-16 win in the set.
UNF will open up Atlantic Sun action on Friday, Oct. 1 when the Ospreys host Stetson at 7 p.m. in UNF Arena. The Ospreys will host Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m.
