JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team concludes its seven game homestand with a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series against Stetson at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium.
The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, May 15, at 1 p.m. and finishes with a single game on Sunday, May 16, at 1 p.m. Sunday's game will serve as Senior Day and the 11 seniors on the UNF baseball team will be honored before the game. In addition, Sunday's game will be the last regular season home game for Hall of Fame head coach Dusty Rhodes, who announced his retirement earlier this season.
UNF enters the weekend after winning a midweek game against in-state rival USF. The Ospreys fell behind 3-0 early in the game, before rallying for a 15-9 victory over the Bulls. The win improved North Florida to 27-21 overall.
The weekend is pivotal for the Ospreys, as UNF is currently 12-8 (.600) in the A-Sun and in second place in the conference standings. Mercer is in third place with a 13-9 (.591) conference record, followed by East Tennessee State at 14-10 (.583). Stetson is a game back of the Ospreys in the loss column with a 12-9 (.571) conference mark. First place Florida Gulf Coast (20-4 – .833) is on the road at Jacksonville who is currently in sixth place with an 11-9 (.550) A-Sun record. The top six teams advance to the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament. Just outside of the top six in the standings are Belmont (9-11) and Kennesaw State (9-12).
The Hatters lead the all-time series against the Ospreys, 12-10. UNF is 7-6 all-time against Stetson in DeLand, Fla., but is just 3-6 against the Hatters at Harmon Stadium. The Ospreys have won three of the last four meetings between the two schools in Jacksonville.
Stetson enters the weekend with a 25-25 overall record, having dropped a non-conference game to No. 5 Florida State on Wednesday, May 12. Stetson had the tying run at the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning yet could not deliver a dramatic finish and fell 6-2 to No. 5 Florida State at Melching Field. As a team, the Hatters put up a strong effort and out hit the Seminoles 9-8, yet also committed a pair of costly errors that led to two unearned runs.
In Atlantic Sun Conference play, the Hatters have dropped their last two A-Sun series, falling two games to one to both ETSU and USC Upstate.
