JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's tennis team fell just short of defeating the College of Charleston on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex. The Cougars picked up the 4-3 win over the Ospreys.
UNF picks up its first lost off the season, falling to 5-1 overall. The Cougars, who recently fell out of the ITA poll after being ranked 72nd, improve to 2-3.
“We played a really tough match today,” said UNF assistant coach Ronnie Sang. “We just fell short of the win. Hopefully we will learn from our mistakes as we prepare for the next match.”
The Cougars picked up the doubles point early, winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches. UNF's No. 1 tandem of sophomore Aline Berkenbrock and senior Raquel Castro dropped CofC's Emma Haymen and Holly Dowse, 8-5.
Berkenbrock followed up her doubles victory with a win in the No. 1 singles match, defeating Dowse 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in a hard fought three set match.
The Ospreys also picked up points in the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. Junior Victoria Krook defeated Irene Viana, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 5. In the No. 6 spot, Lauren Holton held off Anna Lee Evans with a 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 win.
North Florida will return to the court on Friday, Feb. 26, when the Ospreys make the trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. to face Bethune-Cookman at 3 p.m.
