
North Florida Falls to Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell to Mercer 61-47 on Thursday evening in Atlantic Sun Conference action at the University Center in Macon, Ga.
The Ospreys fall to 9-17 overall and 6-11 in Atlantic Sun play, while Mercer improves to 12-14 and 9-8 in league play.
Junior guard Juliemay Syquio tallied 14 points for the Ospreys while grabbing five rebounds and dishing out eight assists. Sophomore guard Margaret Bell notched a career-high 10 points. Bell and senior forward Arlande Cherizol had six rebounds each.
Mercer jumped out to an early 10 point, 14-4 lead at the 13:18 mark. The Ospreys cut the lead down to six (20-14) with just over five minutes left in the opening half. Mercer extended its lead back to 11 (25-14) with 4:21 to go, but the Ospreys again closed the gap, pulling to within six, 25-19, with just over two minutes to go until the half. The Bears closed out the period with a 5-1 run to take a 10 point, 30-20 lead into the break.
The Ospreys came out strong in the second half, starting with a 7-0 run and holding the Bears scoreless for the first four minutes of the half to cut the lead down to three, 30-27. UNF kept the Mercer lead to single digits over the next six minutes, but the Bears pulled ahead by 10, 41-31 with just over 11 minutes left in the game. Mercer maintained a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
North Florida shot 31.5 percent (17-54) from the field, while Mercer shot 39.3 percent (22-56). The Ospreys shot 12.5 percent (2-16) from behind the arc and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line. The Bears shot 36.8 percent (7-19) from 3-point range and 90.9 percent (10-11) from the line. Neicey Lewis and Courtney Ford led the Bears with 11 points each, while Lacy Ramon grabbed seven rebounds.
The Ospreys will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 20, when they remain in Georgia to face Kennesaw State in a noon tip-off.
