PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- The No. 5-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers used strong rebounding and solid defense in handing the University of North Florida a disappointing 95-49 loss Saturday afternoon at the Petersen Event Center.
Pitt (3-0) finished with 59 rebounds on the day including 32 on the offensive end while UNF (0-2) grabbed just 28 in the game. The Panthers also scored 29 points on 21 Osprey turnovers and posted a 47-17 advantage in bench scoring.
Andy Diaz posted his second consecutive double-figure scoring performance leading the way for UNF with 14 points. Jerron Granberry chipped in 10 points as the only other player for the Ospreys in double figures. J.J. Moore poured in 19 points off the bench in leading five double digit scorers for Pitt.
“We came out today and just didn't compete,” said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. “I was pretty disappointed and embarrassed by our performance. We have to get back to work and we are going to get this thing figured out. I thought one of our biggest issues tonight was that some of our guys let their offensive struggles affect their defensive intensity and that's not good.”
Despite playing a second game in less than 24 hours, the Ospreys came out of the blocks quickly trading baskets over the first several minutes with the talented Panther squad. Pitt eventually used a 13-2 surge to seize control of the momentum and build a double-digit lead they would never relinquish.
The Ospreys trailed 48-21 at halftime and slipped behind by 30 points early in the second half. The Panthers continued to build their lead late in the game as UNF's limited depth was unable to maintain a competitive balance against Pitt's wave of rested bench players.
UNF continues its season opening six-game road stretch Thursday night at Wyoming. The trip to Laramie, Wyo., begins a 10-day, four-game swing that also includes a game at Missouri and two games in Cancun, Mexico.
