Volleyball Hits Road for a Pair of A-Sun Contests

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team is set to travel to Georgia for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches beginning at Mercer on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. in the University Center. On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Ospreys will travel to Kennesaw State for a 3 p.m. match at KSU Convocation Center.
UNF (4-13, 1-1 A-Sun) is coming of an out-of-conference, 3-1 win over Bethune-Cookman. Sophomore Paige Pridgeon and senior Jessica Catelano are leading the Ospreys, averaging 3.82 and 2.35 kills per set, respectively. Sophomore Dagnija Medina is adding 1.89 kills and has posted a team-high 53 blocks this season. Freshman Britt Claessens is averaging 8.77 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore Nicole Baran is averaging 4.0 blocks per set.
The Bears (6-14, 0-2 A-Sun) fell to Belmont and Lipscomb, 3-0 last weekend in their conference openers. Amiee Frutchey is leading the team with 2.27 kills per set while Jamie Duffy is adding 1.92. Bridget Sheerin is notching 5.66 assists and Carly Iannarino is taylling 3.56 assists per set. Charlotte Harris is averaging 4.93 digs per set.
North Florida holds the 8-4 advantage in the all-time series against Mercer, but the Bears picked up the wins last season. The Bears won 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-23) in Macon and 4-1 (15-25, 25-14, 25-15, 26-24) last season. Pridgeon averaged 4.29 kills over the two matches last season, tallying 16 on the road.
KSU (8-9, 1-1 A-Sun) split the opening weekend of conference action, defeating Belmont, 3-2 before falling to Lipscomb, 3-0. The Owls are being led Sabrita Gulley with 3.91 kills per set. Alyssa Lang is adding 2.79. Sara Metroka is posting 9.07 assists per set and on the defensive side, Camille Pedraza is tallying 3.52 digs per set.
The two teams are tied in the all-time series with both teams having won three matches. KSU picked up both matches last season, winning 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-16) at home before battling to five sets at UNF for the 3-2 (25-22, 8-25, 24-26, 25-21, 15-12) win later in the season. Pridgeon averaged 3.5 kills per set last season and tallied 21 in the match at UNF. Baran notched 2.5 digs per set against the Owls last season.
Following the road swing, the Ospreys will be back at home to host A-Sun foes USC Upstate on Friday, Oct. 15 (7 p.m.) followed by East Tennessee State on Saturday, Oct. 16 (3 p.m.). The match against the Bucs will mark UNF's Dig Pink Breast Cancer Awareness match as well as Youth Day.
