UNF remains at home to face crosstown rival JU on Wednesday, Jan. 27

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team fell 70-58 to USC Upstate in Atlantic Sun Conference action on Thursday, Jan. 21, at UNF Arena.

The Ospreys fell to 5-14 overall and 2-8 in Atlantic Sun play, while Upstate improved to 11-7 and 5-4 in league play.

The women will remain home to face crosstown rival Jacksonville in the second SunTrust River City Rumble match-up of the year on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. at UNF Arena. The game is a “Pack the House Challenge.”

Student guest passes for those events are $5 and limited to one per student.

The first half was tight for the majority of the half with neither team leading by more than five points for the first 13 minutes of the half. The Ospreys went on a 10-2 run over a two-minute span to lead 30-19 with 4:15 to go before the break. But Upstate responded with a 12-1 run to end the half to tie the game at 31.

Redshirt freshman guard Jadhken Kerr led UNF with nine points in the half as the Ospreys shot 44 percent from the field in the first stanza. The Spartans shot 36.4 percent in the first half.

Upstate continued its run to start the second half by outscoring North Florida 13-4 over the first six-plus minutes of the half to take control of the game and led by nine at 44-35 with 13:43 remaining. UNF would get as close as seven at 54-47 with 7:58 to play but that was as close as the Ospreys would get.

Sophomore guard Brittany Kirkland led UNF with 12 points and junior guard Juliemay Syquio added 11 and five assists. Senior forward Arlande Cherizol continued her torrid rebounding run by pulling down a game-high 15 boards.

North Florida shot 40.4 percent (21-52) from the field, while Upstate shot 41.0 percent (25-61). The Ospreys shot 42.9 percent (6-14) from behind the arc and 52.6 percent (10-19) from the free throw line. The Spartans shot 35.3 percent (6-17) from 3-point range and 58.3 percent (14-24) from the line. Tee'Ara Copney led Upstate with 29 points, while Chelsea McMillan had 17 points and 13 rebounds.
