The Ospreys will compete in their second tournament of the 2009 season this weekend at App State.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team is set to travel to Boone, N.C. for the 2009 Appalachian State Invitational in the Holmes Center, Sept. 4-5. The Ospreys will face Tennessee Tech on Friday at 5 p.m.
Saturday's contests will pit the Ospreys (2-2) against host team Appalachian State in a noon match-up while UNF will face William & Mary later that day at 5 p.m.
“We are very excited about this upcoming weekend,” UNF head volleyball coach Kevin Campbell said. “There are three historically strong teams in this tournament, and we get the opportunity to test our skills against some very good competition.”
Last weekend the Ospreys competed at the UCF Classic in Orlando, Fla. Leading the team was junior middle blocker Kaley Read who averaged 4.12 kills per set over the four matches. In the season opener, against Florida Atlantic Read set a career-high with 28 kills. Newcomer and junior setter Jessica Catelano averaged 9.92 assists per set. Freshman outside hitter Paige Pridgeon added 2.77 kills per set while averaging a team-leading 2.77 digs.
TTU (0-3) is looking to pick up its first win of the season this weekend. Amanda Lindgren leads the Golden Eagles early in the season with 3.44 kills per set while Leah Meffert is adding 3.56 kills.
App State (1-3) competed in Fullterton, Calif. for the season opening weekend. The Mountaineers picked up a win against Lamar. Maja Jechorek averaged a team leading 3.89 kills per set. Kasey Sauls averaged 9.89 assists while Jechorek, along with Courtney Rhein, averaged 2.56 digs per set.
William & Mary (3-1) hosted the Tribe Invitational during the opening weekend. The Tribe's lone loss came to Ohio State. Erin Skipper and Jordyn Moloney are leading the team with 3.92 kills and 9.93 assists per set, respectively. Lindsey Pflugner is leading on the defensive side with 4.25 digs per set.
“Any team in this tournament could win it all,” said Campbell. “A tournament with this kind of parity is great for evolving a team's desire to win and cultivating their ability to stick it out all the way until the end of the match. This weekend does not feature a David vs. Goliath, but rather four equitable teams battling it out against each other.”
