UNF plays at UAB and Samford this weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After a rainout last weekend created an 11-day break from action for the University of North Florida women's tennis team, the Lady Ospreys will pick up where they left off and try to remain perfect on the season when they make a two-match stop in Alabama this weekend.
Schedule
UNF (3-0) at Alabama-Birmingham (1-1) – Friday, Feb. 20 – 3 p.m.
UNF at Samford (0-2) – Saturday, Feb. 21 – 1 p.m.
Inside the Matchups
Three Lady Ospreys have notched perfect records in singles action this season, topped by junior Raquel Castro at the No. 2 position. Senior Ina Durcakova also sports a 3-0 record, playing at the No. 3 slot while sophomore Victoria Krook has yet to drop a match in the fifth position.
UAB opened its dual season at Memphis on Feb. 10 and suffered a 4-0 loss. Six days later, the Blazers gathered their first win of the season when they rolled past Jacksonville State 6-1. UAB has posted a 5-4 record in singles play and a 2-3 doubles record during dual competition.
Samford also opened its dual season against Memphis and faced the same result. On Feb. 10, the Bulldogs fell to Memphis 4-2 before dropping a 6-1 decision to Georgia State later that same week. The Bulldogs have picked up only two singles wins in 17 tries this season.
Looking Back
UNF swept its first weekend of home action, scoring wins against Missouri-Kansas City and Florida A&M. Last weekend, the Lady Ospreys' home match against Troy was washed out after heavy rains overnight drenched the courts at the UNF Tennis Complex.
The Lady Ospreys dropped only two matches during their two-match home stretch two weeks ago, falling in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles to Florida A&M. UNF took the Nos. 2 and 3 decisions from the Rattlers to capture the doubles point before sweeping the Nos. 2-6 singles matches in straight sets.
Who's Hot
Durcakova collected wins in both her singles and doubles matches in UNF's latest action and boasts a 3-0 record in both this season. She tallied straight-set wins at the No. 4 singles position against UMKC and FAMU. Playing with freshman Nikita van Lierop, Durcakova dropped only three total games in the No. 2 doubles slot during the Lady Ospreys' two matches last week.
Did you hear?
Head coach Rodrigo Puebla on facing UAB: “It's going to be very challenging. It will be cold there and we don't know if the match will be played inside or outside. UAB has a very strong team, and we must play with intensity early in the match.”
Puebla on battling Samford: “They had some injuries early this season, but I think they will have their full lineup this weekend. They play at a high level as well and will be another tough task for us.”
Puebla's final thoughts: “Both programs are in the building stages and have good coaches. This will be a weekend where we can prove what we are capable of doing against a pair of good teams.”
