
Volleyball Falls to ETSU, 3-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida volleyball team fell to Atlantic Sun opponent East Tennessee State on Friday night at Brooks Gym. With scores of 25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 25-16 the Bucs picked up the 3-1 win.
Leading the Ospreys (10-17, 4-13 A-Sun) was freshman outside hitter Paige Pridgeon with a match leading 18 kills. Junior middle blocker Kaley Read added 15 kills. Junior setter Jessica Catelano had 45 assists while freshman libero had a match high 19 digs on the defensive side.
The Bucs (10-16, 8-9 A-Sun) were led by Erin Ryan with 12 kills. McKayla Barber had 11 kills. Amanda Youell posted 43 assists and Jen Neice notched 43 digs.
UNF and ETSU battled back and forth in the opening set, until the Bucs took a 15-10 lead. UNF battled back and closed the gap to one at 23-22 off a kill from senior outside hitter Agata Dawidowicz. The Bucs regained possession on the next rally and took the first set, 25-23.
In the second set the Ospreys jumped out to an early lead, taking an 11-4 advantage. ETSU closed the gap to two at 19-17, but UNF held on to the lead. The Bucs would not back down and tied the set at 24. The two teams tied at 25 and 26, but the Ospreys closed out the set to pick up the 28-26 win and knot the match at one set each.
ETSU took the lead in the third set, going up 15-10. The Ospreys cut into the Bucs' lead, closing the gap to one at 19-18. East Tennessee State held on to the lead, winning the third set 25-21.
In the fourth set the two teams traded points early and were tied at 10. The Bucs responded with a 15-6 run to close out the set, 25-16 and secure the match.
“We played hard, but had too many ups and downs to be able to beat ETSU on their home court,” said head coach Kevin Campbell. “We had a framework of good volleyball and good volleyball skills and execution, but rode a rollercoaster of confidence with ups and downs. We just couldn't pull it out at the end of the match tonight.”
UNF will be back on the court on Saturday, Nov. 7 for a 3 p.m. match against Campbell at the Pope Center in Buies Creek, N.C.
