UNF Women's Soccer Travel to Stetson and FGCU

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team will continue Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road this weekend. The Ospreys are slated to play the Stetson Hatters on Friday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. in DeLand, Fla., followed by a trip to Fort Myers, Fla., to take on the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 11, at 1 p.m.

After splitting last weekend's matches against Kennesaw State (1-0 loss) and Mercer (1-0 win), UNF sits at .500 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings. Of the 11 teams that make up the A-Sun Conference four are currently tied at 2-2, which is tied for fifth.

“This year is a completely different feel, we're now playing for a championship,” said head coach Linda Hamilton. “Coupled with the two years with Morgan (assistant coach) and myself as a coaching staff, everybody's getting used to it, not to mention the recruiting class that we have brought in. But I'll say this that the overall team attitude and atmosphere has a different feel and they know that they are a talented team.”

UNF (5-7-1, A-Sun 2-2) and the Hatters (6-6-0, A-Sun 2-2) had similar results last weekend. Stetson won against Campbell and then lost to FGCU on Sunday. UNF leads the all-time series 3-1 versus Stetson.

Stetson junior forward Tessa Gavilsky matches up well against UNF's senior forward Katelin Swift. Both players have seven goals, three assists and 17 points on the season. Gavilsky scored the only goal in their loss to the Eagles and another in their win against Campbell. The Hatter's junior goalkeeper Andrea Garavaglia made seven saves in the last match for Stetson and is tied for third in the A-Sun standing with 62 saves. In last season's matchup the Ospreys were able to score against Garavaglia, one being buried by senior forward Elena Luzins in a 2-1 UNFovertime win.

Florida Gulf Coast (8-4-1, A-Sun 3-1) is tied for second with Jacksonville in the conference standings and will play the Dolphins on Friday. Florida Gulf Coast leads the series against UNF 2-0 all-time. Amber McCall leads FGCU in goals with five and had the game-winning goal in UNF's loss last season to the Eagles.

The supporting cast for the Ospreys has been an integral part to their success this season. Freshman Michele Larrinaga has been a key addition for the Ospreys, scoring six goals, and helping UNF put up 23 goals on the year. The 23 goals through 13 games has easily surpassed last season's 17 scored in 13 games.
