UNF and Lipscomb tie 2-2 in double overtime
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to three matches as the Ospreys battled Lipscomb to a 2-2 overtime tie on Friday, Oct. 16, in Nashville, Tenn.
The Ospreys (2-8-1, 2-1-1 Atlantic Sun) won their two matches heading into the contest with the Bison and the draw extended UNF's season and conference unbeaten streak to three matches.
“It was a good match,” said head coach Ray Bunch. “We came out quite well and were able to score early. They basically controlled the match, but we showed good heart and good character to put ourselves back in the match. In overtime, both teams had opportunities. I thought that we were very fortunate to come out of the match with a draw.”
In the seventh minute of the match, North Florida was the first to scratch the scoreboard. Senior Matthew Hollyoak scored his first goal of the season off of an assist from junior Jordan Allerding.
Lipscomb knotted the score at 1-1 in the 26th minute. The Bison's Miguel DaSilva scored his fourth goal of the season thanks to a Drew Longinotti assist. Longinotti gave the host school a one-goal lead thanks to assists by DaSilva and Garrett Pettis in the 59th minute.
In the 82nd minute, junior Adam O'Neill scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off of an assist from Hollyoak. The goal sent the match into overtime.
Neither team was able to score in the first overtime, forcing a second overtime stanza. Both teams failed to score in the second overtime, ending the match in a draw. Lipscomb posted five of its 31 shots in overtime with sophomore goalkeeper Jullian Beau deflecting both shots on goal. In the match, Beau finished with seven saves.
The Bison outshot the Ospreys 31 to nine overall and nine to six in shots on goal. UNF was more efficient with its shots scoring on two of the six shots on goal (33.3-percent). North Florida was more physical than Lipscomb, earning 23 fouls compared to just 12 by the hosts.
The University of North Florida continues its road trip in Nashville as UNF takes on Belmont in an Atlantic Sun Conference match on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.
