UNF’s men’s soccer team will play Lipscomb and Belmont on the road.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's soccer team heads to Nashville, Tenn. for a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches. The Ospreys (2-8-0, 2-1-0 A-Sun) open the weekend at Lipscomb on Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m., before taking on Belmont in a match on Sunday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.
The Ospreys enter the weekend on a two-match winning streak. UNF defeated reigning A-Sun Regular Season Champion, Stetson on Sunday, Oct. 4, by a score of 2-0. Almost a week later on Saturday, Oct. 11, North Florida traveled across town to take on Jacksonville, – the 2008 A-Sun Tournament Champions. The Ospreys were able to overcome a one goal deficit with two goals in the second half to improve to 2-1-0 in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
UNF is currently fifth in the Atlantic Sun Conference, but if the tournament was seeded today, the Ospreys would be the No. 4 seed as Florida Gulf Coast is not eligible due to reclassification to Division I.
Lipscomb and Belmont sit at ninth and 10th in the A-Sun, respectively. Lipscomb enters the weekend with a 3-8-2 overall record and a 0-3-1 conference mark. Belmont is 1-10-1 overall and stands at 0-4-0 in the A-Sun.
The Ospreys enter the weekend led by junior Adam O'Neill. The London, England native has scored three goals on the season with one assist for a team-high seven points. Just behind O'Neill is senior Frank Dinzey with five points. Dinzey has scored a pair of goals, while adding an assist.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, UNF wasted little time knotting the score at one apiece. With just under five minutes off of the clock, Dinzey crossed the ball to O'Neill whose shot at point blank range was deflected by the goalie. Sophomore Peter Lauer collected the loose ball and put it in the middle of the net to tie the score at one goal each.
With slightly over seven minutes to play in the match, Steven Lowenthal scored his first goal of the season to put the Ospreys ahead. Shareef Rajkumar crossed the ball from the left side and placed it right in the middle of the box for Lowenthal.
