Lady Ospreys begin 2008 on Friday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida women's volleyball team will try to build on its successful spring season when it opens 2008 at the FAU Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.
The tournament includes Bethune-Cookman, Florida Atlantic and Northern Iowa. UNF (4-26, 1-10 Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007) will open its weekend against Northern Iowa at 5 p.m. on Friday. Picked to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference, UNI finished 22-11 overall and was tied for second in the MVC with a 14-4 record.
The Lady Ospreys will take on host FAU at Noon on Saturday. UNF defeated the Owls in thrilling fashion last season at the UCF Invitational, taking the match in five sets for the Lady Ospreys' first win. FAU finished 6-21 in 2007 and returns all nine players from last year's team.
UNF closes out the tournament with Bethune-Cookman at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Lady Ospreys swept the Wildcats in last season's two-match series. BCU finished 8-18 in 2007 and returns eight players.

Who To Watch Out For: Bary Rasmussen is the lone senior on the Lady Ospreys and is the team's emotional leader. UNF's leading blocker in 2007 with 84 and is the team's second-leading returning attacker with 211 kills. Last spring, she teamed up with sophomore Kaley Read to win their division at the Division I Florida Beach Championships in Sarasota, Fla., with a win over Mississippi State's Christina Jucan and Stefanie Joyner.
Notables: The Lady Ospreys are 11-6 all-time in season openers … UNF is entering its fourth season of Division I, its last as a provisional member before becoming eligible for postseason in 2009 … the Lady Ospreys are opening their season away from home for the fourth-straight year and have never kicked off the season at home in Division I … UNF is 0-2 all-time in Boca Raton … the Lady Ospreys return 51 percent of its kill production among starters from last season with Rasmussen and Read … Rasmussen and Read also contributed 88 percent of UNF's total blocks last season.
