Ospreys face top-ranked Miami on Tuesday
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball team will head south to Coral Gables, Fla., on Tuesday to take on top- ranked Miami. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
It will be the third team this season UNF will have played that has been ranked No. 1 at some point this season. The Ospreys fell 10-2 to top-ranked Florida State on April 16 in Tallahassee and dropped two to No. 2 North Carolina last week. The Tar Heels were ranked first earlier this season.
Although taking on the top team in the nation might be a tough challenge for the Ospreys, it's not as if beating the Hurricanes is unfamiliar. UNF beat Miami 3-2 last season in Coral Gables on the back of Antonio Franzese's superb pitching. Franzese held the preseason No. 5 Hurricanes to just one hit through six innings and ended up allowing a total of two in his seven innings of work.
UNF dropped two of three to Atlantic Sun Conference rival Kennesaw State over the weekend in Kennesaw, Ga. The Ospreys lost both games of Saturday's doubleheader and totaled just 13 hits for both games. The team bounced back on Sunday to win 6-5 in 10 innings. Junior Tyler Stohr picked up the win in relief after tossing three innings and not allowing any runs.
The Hurricanes took two of three from Virginia Tech in their Atlantic Coast Conference series over the weekend. Miami dropped game one of a doubleheader on Saturday to the Hokies, which snapped UM's seven game winning streak. Nine of Miami's starters are hitting over .300, while the team is hitting .334.
