Senior Vanessa Sanchez perfect in No. 2 singles
WICHITA, Kan. - The University of North Florida women's tennis team got a win from senior Vanessa Sanchez, but it wasn't enough to overtake a tough 43rd-ranked Boise State squad in a 4-1 loss at the Wichita State Shocker Invitational. The match was moved to WSU's indoor facility due to forecasts of rain.
Sanchez blanked BSU's Bianca Jochimsen in the No. 2 singles match, 6-0, 1-0. Jochimsen retired in the second set. Sanchez finished 2-0 over the weekend.
"We came out with a better intensity than yesterday," said assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla. "We realized that to be able to compete with a team like this, we needed to come out with more tenacity. I was happy with how we were able to adjust to the indoors. Hopefully with our improvement, it will help us to play at a higher level in our next conference match."
Junior Natalia Sanchez pushed BSU's Pichitira Thongdach to the brink in the first set of their No. 1 singles match, falling 7-6. But Sanchez wasn't able to sustain the momentum and dropped the second set 6-0.
The Ospreys will return to action at 1 p.m. on Friday at Campbell in an Atlantic Sun Conference match. UNF has won four of its last five conference matches.
